Cititour.com Review
There's a lot more than just a touch of star quality in the new revival of Evita. Considering that about 30 years ago, Patti LuPone became inexorably intertwined with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s unlikely musical theatre heroine, Eva Peron (followed by a film version with Madonna), the part now overwhelmingly belongs to Argentinian, Elena Rogers.

Rogers, a triple threat, attacks Rob Ashford’s brilliant choreography with amazing style. She delicately fusses over soon-to-be-president of Argentina, Peron, (Michael Cerveris) with finesse. And when it comes to vocals, Rogers possesses the vulnerable vibrato of Piaf (whom she portrayed on the West End), along with the power of any of Broadway’s top belters.

Cerveris plays the head of state like a teddy bear, head over heels in love with Eva, while struggling with his military allies. Ricky Martin, as Che, is charismatic and intense, commanding attention and just as quickly fading into the pale walls which make up the set - standing in for everything from courtyards to palaces. Gone are the rebel camouflage pants originally displayed by this character. Now, costume designer, Christopher Oram, bathes Martin in soft cream and casual slacks, as he slips easily, like a ghost, throughout the journey of Evita’s life.

Michael Grandagae stages the production with artful blocking offering equal parts sweeping majesty and thoughtful texture. Webber’s repetitive score, with melodies and rhythms feeding the story, is best when simply absorbed. Rice's lyrics serve as a powerful mix of exposition and transitional emotion in this sung-through musical.

Elena Rogers gives a tour-de-force performance. Entertaining in a dynamic fashion, this revival of Evita is simply electrifying!
