Cititour.com Review
Colin Quinn hails from the blue-collar school of comedy. Whether performing stand-up or one of his recurring characters on Saturday Night Live, he’s cultivated his Average Joe image to a tee. So it's a fun surprise to find him using his straight-shooting, dry delivery to philosophize on the history of the world in his solo Broadway act Colin Quinn: Long Story Short. It's as if an undergrad Western civilization professor invaded Quinn's brain, but the determined comedian vowed not to be completely overtaken.

Aided only by projections (part of David Gallo’s scenic design), Quinn proves to be an equal opportunity offender as he takes us on a trip around the world, using his smart and sassy brand of humor to dissect such civilizations as ancient Greece, Islam, India, the British Empire, the Far East and, finally, the United States.

Quinn draws analogies between aspects of our present-day world and those of eras that seems far removed from it, then turns them into easily digestible comedic bits, whether noting that the average Greek child watched 40 hours of theater a wee, arguing that wars are less about land than father issues and turning the England/France rivalry into a tale of amorous jealousy.

With a running time that's only slightly longer than an HBO comedy special, 75 minutes, he and director Jerry Seinfeld keep the show on cruise control throughout. If one joke misses its mark, it's not long before another lands right on target. Beyond a mere master class in the art of stand-up, Long Story Short makes being both street smart and book smart look like worthy pursuits.
