The Holiday Market at Union Square is a great place to shop beyond the larger department stores and big box chains. You will not only find unique gifts, but you will also be helping up-and-coming entrepreneurs.

At Tribal Home [www.tribalhome.com] there are Turkish mosaic lamps in all sorts of shapes and sizes. They come in a kaleidoscope of colors that are sure to brighten any home. They also sell beautiful hand-painted pottery.

At Kips Kids [www.kipkids.com] colorful onesies and tee-shirts line the walls. The New York City shirts featuring giraffes, zebras and other safari animals riding taxis and trains are perfect for the well-dressed city kid.

Wearable gifts a Pook [shop.pook.ca] are a bit more avant garde. They include wool caps and thigh-high socks, stockings and something they called a "Soctopus." The one we saw was tied around a mannequin's face like some sort of nose warmer.

At Gifts for Golfers we found personalized golf ball markers with names engraved on a shiny silver plate. They come in there own golf ball-shaped case.

Belle Costes and Scott Jordan have set up a stand selling artifact art and jewelry. There's a slew on interesting stuff ranging from antiques shoes, dolls and liquor bottles sold in handmade wooden frames. We even spotted an antique pistol.

Twinkos [www.twinkonyc.com] is selling tee-shirts, bibs and other clothing for tiny tots. They're made with organic materials and handcrafted in New York City. Many come with animal figures like crabs and bears with titles ranging from "Future Doctor" to "Grumpy Day."

Pet lovers will freak over the finds at Yoyo Dog with everything from collars to coats. We particularly liked the wool knit caps and green and red hoodies for small dogs.

We capped off our visit with some homemade cider from the Breezy Hill Orchard along with some apple cider doughnuts. They also have ginger bread cookies for sale. A breezy end to a nice day of shopping.
