This rally is to protest the new Chancellor Regulation A-812, which prohibits home-baked foods from being sold at school fundraisers while permitting Doritos and Pop-Tarts instead.  Yes, this regulation mandates that if we want to raise money for our schools, we have to buy and sell junk food to our children!  Our cookies and banana bread aren’t good enough.

We believe it’s critical for all parent to come out and voice their opposition at the steps of City Hall with us for the following reasons:

- Our schools cannot become supermarkets where big food corporations, like Pepsi Cola and Kellogg, can advertise and sell their processed foods to our children.

- Our children cannot receive the message that junk food is healthier for them than foods cooked at home.  This will only encourage a lifetime of bad eating habits.

- We cannot allow the DOE to get away with telling parents what to buy and feed our children.  What other tyrannical measures will they come up with next?

- We have to insist that we, as parents, be made part of the discussion about our children’s health, since we love and want what’s best for our children.

So, please, after school on the 18th, get on the 4/6 train with your children, get off at City Hall and join us in this rally.  We will be setting up one table with the approved DOE items and another table with home-baked goods with a list of ingredients for everyone to see.  For all working parents, we are asking you to try and get off work early that day; we feel this issue is that important.  If you can’t get off work early, please consider having your babysitter come down with your children.  The rally will be a great lesson to all our children about the importance of fighting for what you believe in.  We welcome all other people who feel as passionately about this as we do to join us on the 18th as well!

Detailed information about the bake-in regarding posters, banners, slogan ideas, etc. will be posted on our blog NYCGREENSCHOOLS.ORG.  If you want to keep updated about the rally and find out how you can help, keep checking in with our blog and sign up to join our email list!  If you can’t make the rally, but would like to have your voice heard, we will be setting up a letter campaign on our blog, so that you can visit us there on the 18th and be a part of this event.

In the meantime, consider hosting a poster party for parents at your school to put together signs and banners for the rally.  Send this flyer to everyone you know and make sure that at least five of your friends come out for it.  If you have any ideas you’d like to share with us, please post a comment on our blog.  We’d love to hear from you!

And get the aprons out of your closets and put them on, so we can remind the DOE who the real cooks are!
