Indiana Jones may be taking over the big screen this
summer, but alpacas, owls, and reptiles are among the stars in the
Wildlife Conservation Society's Prospect Park Zoo's big feature: "Animal
Encounters!" This new interactive program opens in the zoo's barn and
Discovery Theater on Friday, May 23. The experience will bring some of the
zoo's most unique animals out of their habitats and into ours, satisfying
the curiosity of anyone who's ever wondered what an iguana's skin
feels like or just how wooly an alpaca can be. "Animal Encounters" is free
with zoo admission and will run on select days throughout the summer.
For the first time ever, Prospect Park Zoo visitors will see some of
the animals they usually visit at the zoo in a new light. Keepers will
take special animals--from a feathery goose to a quill-covered porcupine,
out of their exhibits for a little while and into the zoo's theater or
barn area for everyone to see...close up! Keepers and volunteers will
give chats as visitors get a front-row view and feel of the featured
animal, providing an excellent and interactive way to learn about our zoo
residents. For example, did you know that porcupines do not actually
throw their quills?
These exciting encounters with the zoo's amazing animals will be held
Fridays through Mondays until September, at select times to be scheduled
on a day-to-day basis. Visitors can check the times and locations for
featured animals on signs posted at the zoo's main entrance. "Previews"
are running now in the zoo's theater on weekends at 12, 12:30, 2:30,
and 3 p.m. It's sure to be one summer blockbuster that's worth checking
out!
Prospect Park Zoo - $6 for adults, $2.25 for seniors 65 and older, $2
for kids 3-12, free for children under 3. Zoo hours are 10 am to 5 pm,
Monday - Friday; 10 am to 5:30 pm weekend. The Prospect Park Zoo is
located at 450 Flatbush Avenue in Prospect Park, Brooklyn. For further
