October’s NextNext Music festival showcases the next generation ofmusicians who, in the spirit of the Next Wave Festival, are paving radical and new musical paths.
Led by singer-songwriter Derek Bermel, Brooklyn-based band Peace by Piece melds soulful lyrics and funky grooves with a relentless, luscious bass for a sound that is nuanced, heavy, and spiritual. Zydeco, funk and samba are some of the genres that inspirethe band’s sound. Featuring Bobby Roe on bass, Steve Altenberg on drums, as well asBermel on keyboards and the Brazilian caxixi, the trio explores a collection ofinternational rhythms. A versatile classical composer who has performed with everyonefrom Wynton Marsalis to John Adams, Bermel combines his classical background with adesire to explore international song melodies that expands the language of modern funk-pop and jazz.
