The one thing Mad. Sq. Eats has that other outdoor food fairs lack is an electricity in the air. Vendors wrap around this tiny square in the shadow of the world famous Flatiron Building. Cafe-style seating in the center, under a canopy of flowery umbrellas, is loud and fun as tourists and city dwellers come together for some food magic.

There are pizzas fresh from a wood-fired oven at Roberta's, tempting tacos at Calexico and lobster BLTs at Red Hook Lobster Pound. I've been coming here several years now and always find something new.

This season we sampled the empanadas at La Sonrisa. They come in flavors like coconut curry chicken and ham & cheese. A classic beef version made with peas and carrots derives its flavor from sofrito. It's deep fried and delicious, and at $3.75 a pop won't break the bank.

At Hong Kong Street Cart, $4 buys you a "pork belly" bun that is worth every penny. The meat is ultra rich served with scallion, cucumber and a spicy wasabi. Or, if you're looking to fill up, a bowl of bright green cold sesame noodles sprinkled with peanuts and scallions is a steal six bucks.

Cap it off with an Affogato at Gelato Ti Amo. It's basically a scoop of your favorite gelato, chocolate hazelnut in this case, that is flooded with espresso. At $4, it makes for a very strong finish. So much to try, so little time. Eat up!
