The Museum Mile Festival that was started more than 30 years ago to help bridge the cultural gap between those who have means (and those who may not) remains just as relevant today.

Named for the mile-long stretch of Fifth Avenue that closes to vehicular traffic during the late afternoon/early evening event, the festival combines street performance, activities, and free admission to eight of New York’s most impressive cultural institutions including El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York, the Jewish Museum, Cooper Hewitt, the Guggenheim, the Neue Galerie, the Goethe-Institut, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

With the absence of traffic, New Yorkers may walk Fifth Avenue with ease, taking their time to enjoy outdoor performances near each museum. Visitors can look forward to seeing a production by the Abakuá Afro-Latin Dance Co., music by Johnny Colón and his orchestra, the Hayes Greenfield Jazz Duo, and the cabaret song styling of Australian artist Kim Smith. Ad-hoc ballet performances by the Folkloric Ballet of New York and street theater by the Quarteto Rodriguez Cuban Jewish Allstars are also scheduled.

While you’re there, check out the new Joel Grey exhibit at the Museum of the City of New York that features 40 years of his theatrical artifacts and photographs. Bedazzle yourself at the Van Cleef & Arpels exhibit at Cooper Hewitt. See what one hundred thousand dollars looks like in single bills at the Guggenheim, and be amazed by the clothing designs of Alexander McQueen at his Metropolitan Museum of Art retrospective, Savage Beauty.

As it has in the past, the Museum Mile Festival is a family friendly event that includes plenty of activities and performances that put children first. Besides street actors who do everything from puppetry to plate spinning, artists will be on hand to offer free face painting. Magicians, jugglers, and balloon artists enhance the merriment while children and adults alike enjoy doodling the span of Fifth Avenue alongside street artist De La Vega. For more kid-inspired thrills visit Sammie and Tudie’s Imagination Playhouse, located at Ninety-third Street. Whether you get to one museum or all eight, the Museum Mile Festival is a summer favorite among New Yorkers of all ages.
