The New Museum Block Party is a day of art activities and performances on Saturday July 19, 2008, from 12 to 7 p.m. in Sara D. Roosevelt Park. Enjoy a range of artist- and educator-led interactive projects and programs related to the neighborhood and the New Museum as well as a tour of the exhibition "2008 Altoids Award" at the New Museum. Block Party is free and open to the public. Everyone welcome!

Block Party is organized by the New Museum. Participating community organizations include the Bowery Poetry Club, Open House New York Tenement Museum, Chinatown YMCA Houston Street Center, Educational Alliance, Rivington House, and University Settlement.

Block Party activities are in Sara D. Roosevelt Park and at the New Museum at 235 Bowery. All hands-on workshops run from 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m.

Activities in the park include:

- Build a Museum - Inspired by the New Museum's new building, families can build architectural models using playful materials or design a work of art for the building's sculpture ledge similar to Ugo Rondinone's sculpture Hell, Yes!

- Design a Sculpture Garden - Open House New York invites participants to design a sculpture garden for the park, bringing art outside into public space in the already art-rich neighborhood.

- Become a Bowery Artist - In connection with the New Museum's Bowery Artist Tribute, educators will introduce participants to the cultural life in the Bowery that shares the rich artistic legacy of the famed thoroughfare. Resources about the work of Cy Twombly, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, and Keith Haring, among others, are available to inspire familes to create their own artwork.

- Discover the History of the Lower East Side - Using archival and historical images, visitors make collages reflecting the long history of the Lower East Side; stories shared by Tenement Museum educators enrich the imagery.

- Be a Bowery Poet - Poetry is a part of the rich past and present of the Bowery. Interactive workshops led by Bowery Poetry Club poets will encourage participants to create Lower East Side-inspired poems.

Performances in the park include:

- Performances by The Bowery Poetry Club Poets, Youth Poets and the MayHem Poets, a group writing poetry to the beat of hip-hop. At 3:30 and 5:30 p.m.

- Festivities come to life through a series of live performances by Bindelstiff Family Cirkus and Vangeline Theater. At 2, 2:45, 4:30, and 6:15 p.m.

Participants are invited to view and tour the New Museum's new building and exhibitions:

- Every hour, at quarter past the hour beginning at 12:15, New Museum docents lead a group of visitors from the park to the New Museum to explore the building's lobby and the exhibition "2008 Altoids Award," featuring work by four emerging artists.
