You probably know Richard Dreyfuss best for his screen work (Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Down and Out in Beverly Hills, Mr. Holland’s Opus, and his Oscar-winning role in The Goodbye Girl). But he has long been an activist for peace, civil liberties, and the need for citizen involvement in government and politics. He has spoken about these topics at Oxford, Yale, the London School of Economics and George Mason University, and is on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles branch of the ACLU. At the 92nd Street Y, he tackles such questions as: What are the responsibilities of citizens in a democratic society? Do civic roles need to be formally taught? What happens when civic activism declines? Dreyfuss talks with journalist Michael Kramer, the former political correspondent for Time magazine and political editor for New York magazine.
