October’s NextNext Music festival showcases the next generation ofmusicians who, in the spirit of the Next Wave Festival, are paving radical and new musical paths.
Born in Illinois to East African parents, Somi was exposed to stories and music from allover the world. Her music evokes the pure and honest, soaring through the nuances that organically fuse jazz, classic soul, African folk, and rare urban grooves. “Singing hasbeen a journey of healing,” she says. “I want my music to put people in a place of blissand inspiration.” Her lyrically sophisticated “Red Soil In My Eyes” is a resonant andsoulful celebration of her Rwandese and Ugandan heritage that speaks of returning to that most wonderful of places we call “home”.
