Neighborhood: Concourse Type of Place: Museums Description: Founded in 1971, The Bronx Museum of the Arts is a contemporary art institution dedicated to serving its dynamic neighborhood and city as well as the international art world. The Museum has a long-standing commitment to increasing audience participation in the visual arts through its Permanent Collection, exhibitions, and educational programs. The Permanent Collection is unique in its focus on twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists of African, Asian, and Latin American descent. Additionally, the Museum has a special interest in artists who have lived or worked in the Bronx, or whose work addresses concerns specific to the Bronx. In its thirty-four year history, the Museum has established a local and international reputation as a contemporary art museum that actively engages culturally diverse artists and audiences. As the only art museum in the borough, it serves one of the most ethnically and socio-economically diverse constituencies in New York City, largely composed of African-American and Latino populations, as well as an increasing number of African, Asian, Caribbean, Eastern-European, Central- and South-American communities. - Bronx Museum of the Arts
