Bug Carousel at Bronx Zoo
|
Neighborhood: Fordham Type of Place: NYC Attractions Description: This unique ride complements the Zoo's new Butterfly Garden, completing a corner of the Zoo that pays tribute to insects and the role they play in local and global ecosystems. The Bronx Zoo Bug Carousel features 64 hand-carved and hand-painted insects plus two chariots (a dung beetle and monarch butterfly) all crafted from sustainable basswood. WCS staff hatched the insect carousel concept. Carousel Works of Mansfield, Ohio, the world's largest manufacturer of wooden carousels, was then chosen to fabricate the Bronx Zoo ride. The accompanying music was created especially for the ride by composer David Wohl of Colorado, who incorporated actual insect sounds provided by the WCS library of field recordings. A Bug Carousel ride is $2 per person and is also part of the Zoo's Pay-One-Price (POP) ticket value.
