Darling
|
Neighborhood: Chelsea Type of Place: Clothing Description: When Ann French Emonts and her sister admired an article of clothing, "That's darling!" was always their highest praise. So when Emonts, a costume designer and design instructor, decided to open her own clothing shop, there was no question about what it would be called. Darling opened its doors in July 2003, offering chic, witty, and proudly feminine outfits and accessories. The store's space, with invitingly upholstered furniture and a garden out back for warmer weather, feels friendly and comfortable, as does its policy of promoting lesser-known designers, many local, and keeping its prices out of the stratosphere. Dresses - which, to be sure, are some of the most darling around - range from $100-$200. Cynthia Steffe's dress designs have been going fast of late, as have Mary Green's camisoles ($24) with matching shorts ($15) and thongs ($14) and jewelry items from Mother Daughter ($35-$150), designed by Heather Tanton. One-of-a-kind items by Emonts herself are also popular. Hurry to find sweaters (some in yummy cashmere cable), jackets, and coats at 40% off as the store makes way for spring items. (Word to the wise: Some of the winter items on sale will work just fine for early or even mid spring, so you can wear them rather than shelve them after you scoop them up at a discount.) - Pamela Grossman; 02/2004
