Description:

I needed a birthday card for my cousin who was turning 18 years old and jaded with everything except for the fact that she was turning 18.  I sweated over this card as much as I sweated over her gift. Lucky for me, Laura is headed to art school next Fall so to Papél New York I ran. I ended up purchasing a sweet card that dons a kitten pawing a balloon and balancing on a ball of yarn and reads, “Happy Purrrrthday to YOU!” ($6, which is around the cost of most individual greeting cards). I chose a gift I wouldn’t mind receiving myself: a quill-shaped pencil made entirely of graphite. At $52, the pencil is handmade, will not rub off on your hands and is noted to last about 8 years with daily use. To me, this pencil is more like a work of art and well worth the cost.

As a writer, I have too often spent working hours browsing through this letterpress shop. It is refreshing, comforting and scribbled with inspiration for writers and craftspeople of all genres. Papél carries calendars (desk and wall will run anywhere from $15 to $60), wrapping paper, stationery (Thank You and blank note sets go for about $10 - $30), some of the wittiest and creative greetings cards and invitations around, cute gift items, books, writing utensils, and more. The shop gives me hope that there are people out there who still know how to use a pen!

Check out their art-deco inspired coaster sets in bright, funky designs at 4 for $36 or the “Seven Year Pen” by Seltzer Goods which encloses a huge ink cartridge and can provide up to 1.7 meters of writing on a daily basis for seven years!

This paper boutique is also a popular go-to for wedding invitations, as they’ve got a huge selection of paper and designs. Raegan, Papél NY's owner, has been touted by many a hitched friend of mine as a largely creative, patient, experienced invitation designer and seller. For the bride-to-be with her own invite ideas, Raegan is known to be of great assistance when it comes to articulating and guiding customized creations into fruition.

The endangered craft of handwriting lives on at Papél New York – I definitely recommend you make a note to visit this unique paperie, ASAP.
