Description:

The Ramones got it right, we should all be hitching a ride to Rockaway Beach.

Rated New York's top beach in 2015, Rockaway Beach has many things going for it, from its huge sandy beaches (which are some of the cleanest in the city) to its refreshing ocean water that easily rivals the Jersey shore.  It also draws an eclectic mix of people reflecting the city's diversity.  Boardwalk and dunes destroyed by Superstorm Sandy are in the process of being rebuilt and should be completed in 2017.

Rockaway Beach also has some of the city's roughest surf and is known for its dangerous riptides. While it's not ideal for young children, it is a magnet for surfers.  In 2005, the New York City designated part of the beach for surfers between 67-69 St and 87-92 St.  Access to the beach is free. New York City beaches are open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.  The beaches are open daily from 10am to 6pm. Swimming is prohibited when the beaches are closed and strictly enforced.  Street parking and public lots are available.  The A train also stops at 90th Street.
