MACY'S Neighborhood: West 30s Type of Place: Department Stores Description: Here you’ll find a springtime live flower show, photos with Santa and his elves at Christmas, a world-famous parade, regular celebrity and designer appearances…and more shopping than you imagined you could ever fit under one roof! Once you’ve battled the crowds on 34th Street to get in the doors, you’ll feel like you deserve to shop till you drop – and there are clothes, housewares, accessories, shoes, and even furniture in every price range, from designer exclusives to the deeply discounted clearance racks. A couple clues: always give yourself lots of time – there’s often far too much to chose from! And if you’re planning to steal a deal during a One-Day Sale, get there early, or you’ll be frustrated by frantic crowds and rain checks. If you’re looking for the same product, but in a different size or shade, there are other Macy’s in the area—in Queens or Jersey City—but they lack the glamour and the old-fashioned wooden escalators that make the Herald Square Macy’s a favorite New York experience. --Molly, Summer 2005
