We're used to pairing wine with food, and even beer, but tequila? That's the idea at this rustic small-plates Mexican restaurant, offering a variety of authentic Mexican “Platos Pequeños,” with house-made tortillas and more than 20 tequilas on offer. Hell's Kitchen is the perfect place to welcome this tequileria, with a warm environment decorated with hand-painted Day of the Dead murals and extensive selection of Mexican bites and drinks. The food centers around the idea of mixing and matching small dishes with the tequila choices. Dishes range from three different guacamoles – añejo ($10), pineapple chipotle ($12) or tomatillo ($11) – to salads, braised queso fresco ($11) and various tamales and tacos. The tequila menu remains the star, and every dish is created with the tequila list in mind, a list that includes several varieties: Blanco, Reposado, Añejo end Extra Añejo, at prices ranging from $11 to $120. For a tasting, try one of the Tequila flights at $15. While this may seem overwhelming to some, the menu is organized based on the base flavors of the liquors for easier selection. Fans of tequila are sure to love the variety of drinks at this new Mexican joint; those looking for large portions of food, however, may be disappointed by the small plates and the expense. - Emily Monaco
