Demby told the New York Times (The same lot, located at 27 North Sixth Street between Kent Avenue and the East River, hosts the Brooklyn Flea outpost every Sunday)

Judging from the diversity in food choices and smiles on peoples’ faces, Smorgasburg is already a success Some familiar faces made an appearance, such as Red Hook Lobster Pound, Mile End, and Porchetta, but many of the vendors are newbies just learning the ropes or seasoned pros trying out something experimental Demby reached out to established business owners, like Liza Queen of Queen’s Hideaway in Greenpoint, as well as those with a newfound passion for the culinary arts, like John Husby, a line cook from Momofuku Noodle Bar who started King’s Crumb to sell fried chicken and homemade pork sausage

Lines were especially long for vendors who created their own take on street food, such as Connie Sun of Bite Size Kitchen, which offered traditional dumplings, banana-ricotta spring rolls, Shanghai-style scallion shrimp pancakes, and more Just as popular was Mimi and Coco NY with its grilled Japanese “octopus” balls filled with savory sausage, potato, or shrimp Shorty Tang & Sons offered a classic interpretation of cold sesame noodles, prepared from an old family recipe

In addition to specific hot food vendors, about 20 percent of the participants are greenmarket farmers who sell fresh juices, fruit, vegetables, as well as herbs and flowering plants Demby sees the relationship between vendors as symbiotic, as chefs may easily obtain fresh food supplies from local farmers directly on site Smorgasburg represents the first ever mixed-use fresh food court in New York, an idea Greenmarket Director Michael Hurwitz calls a “hybrid endeavor”

Those seeking something sweet had difficult choices to make Among the hits in the dessert category were Nana’s Bananas, frozen chocolate-covered bananas from Cecile Dyer of Pies ’n’ Thighs fame Homemade ice cream from Blue Marble and Fine & Raw Chocolate was also popular, though there was no shortage of fruit-topped pastries, sticky buns, pies of every variety, and cookies galore Best of all, you can pick up something for now and something for later, as plenty of vendors featured homemade prepared foods like jams, pickles, sauces—and yes—artisanal ketchup

Overall, the day came off without a hitch and the lines moved quickly Despite the lack of shade, spirits remained high There’s plenty of green grass to lounge on, warm river breezes, and fun activities for the little ones, courtesy of Tribeca’s Moomah If you do trek out to Smorgasburg in the coming weeks, expect to be somewhat overwhelmed at the sheer number of choices With an ever-growing roster of gourmet attractions, it’s New York’s answer to a food amusement park; just don’t expect to eat it all in one shot

•	Asuka is a celebration of the music of Celia Cruz through the lens of the Latino experience Cruz, renowned as the "Queen of Salsa," captured the heart of Latinos the world over and became a symbol of perseverance for many Through rich imagery and humor, Eduardo Vilaro explores the struggles of departure from one’s homeland and the exuberance of success experienced by a community

• Nube Blanco (White Cloud) is inspired by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa’s childhood memories of the beautiful songs of Maria Dolores Pradera Lopez Ochoa brilliantly integrates the Spanish zapateado technique or footwork that is found in flamenco dance and gives it a contemporary twist “We are thrilled to work with such gifted collaborators this season,” said Eduardo Vilaro, Artistic Director of Ballet Hispanico “Ronald K Brown’s work, set to the music of the incomparable Susana Baca, is mesmerizing Annabelle Lopez Ochoa has showcased the emotional range of our dancers in her pieces And Celia Cruz’s remarkable impact on the Latino community was the inspiration for my first work for Ballet Hispanico I wanted to honor her music, which captured the voice of so many immigrants” The program also includes a revival and repertory favorites:

•	The revival Guajira features the guajira, the women of the Cuban countryside who spend their days toiling in the sun beside the men, then enjoy a little rest and perhaps a bit of flirtation, and in the evening forget their day of toil in a rousing guateque (party) with the other laborers The typical guajiro rhythm is heard here, notably in the second (“Guajiras”) section But, like the culture of Cuba itself, the music and the gestural language of the piece hark back both to Africa and to Spain Guajira was created by Pedro Ruiz and is set to the music of Los Activos, Conjunto Céspedes, and José Maria Vitieir

•	Mad’moiselle, a highly theatrical work that explores iconic male/female images and gender role-playing in Latin American cultures, was created by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa to a soundscape inspired by Chavela Vargas The score, developed by Ms Ochoa with composer/sound designer Bart Rijnink, draws on the music of Ms Vargas, who is best known for her rendition of beloved Mexican rancheras

•	Locked Up Laura, a sensuous pointe duet by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa set to the music of Bart Rijnink, explores the human struggle to maintain authenticity in the face of routine through the lens of an artist

•	Tito on Timbales is a tribute to the music of master percussionist Tito Puente In this ballet, choreographer William Whitener captures the joy and intricacies of social dance through cascading patterns, sensual partnering and the community of celebration

Dancers: Lauren Alzamora, Donald Borror, Jamal Rashann Callender, Mario Ismael Espinoza, Rodney Hamilton, Min-Tzu Li, Andrea Salamanca, Jeffrey Sykes, Vanessa Valecillos, Kimberly Van Woesik, Joshua Winzeler, Jessica Alejandra Wyatt Ballet Hispanico will perform April 17-29, 2012 at The Joyce Theater, with performances Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:30pm; In an age of predator drones flown by pilots weaned on video games, the blurring of boundaries between the real and the virtual has far-reaching implications

Just as the behaviors of the figures in first-person shooter games conform to established vocabularies of action (running, ducking, crawling, shooting), so, too, Tribe implies, do the actions of actual militia men in their training exercises A similar set of conventions governs the representation of landscape; even in video games, a popular commercial medium, depictions of the natural world recall the traditions of Western landscape art (such as the compositions of Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, and other Hudson River School painters) In Rare Earth, Tribe draws our attention to a new form of landscape representation that bridges digital culture and art history

Tribe’s previous work examines the role of performance and mediation in political protest Port Huron Project (2006-09), was a series of reenactments of protest speeches from the New Left movements of the Vietnam era Presented during a period of widespread opposition to the Iraq War, the reenactments explored the rhetorical conventions of leftist political protest in the US In The Dystopia Files (2010-11), a series of video installations and screenings, Tribe looked at interactions between police and protesters as a form of ritualized public theater

Mark Tribe was born in San Francisco in 1966 and lives in New York City His work has been exhibited at SITE Santa Fe; MDE11, Medellín; G-MK, Zagreb; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and LACE, Los Angeles He has received grants from Creative Capital and the New York Foundation for the Arts He is an Assistant Professor at Brown University and a member of Art Practice MFA faculty at SVA In 1996, Tribe founded Rhizome, an organization that supports the creation, presentation, preservation, and critique of emerging artistic practices that engage technology

<pdate>May 05, 2012</pdate>

CHEAP Studio Space for Classes/Workshops this May/June

May 07, 2012 - June 28, 2012:
ARTS RELATED RENTALS ONLY!
