A wretched end to a beloved bookstore. Gotham Book Mart, a fixture in New York City since 1920, closing with a fire sale to pay back rent. Gotham ran into trouble after moving from the Diamond District into a new spacious location on East 46th Street. It ended an era of organized chaos where rare books could be found in random piles throughout the store, although the help always seemed to be able to find exactly what you were looking for. The new shop never really took off and the landlord took action. So, Gotham is gone and with it a bit of New York history. It will be remembered for the famous literary types who shopped there and its famous sign which read, "Wise Men Fish Here."
