YOUNG AT HEART

Can it really be nearly 12 years ago that we first heard the incredible falsetto of John Lloyd Young, whose portrayal of legendary Four Seasons lead singer Frankie Valli in the hit Broadway tuner “Jersey Boys” catapulted him to fame, not to mention fistfuls of awards? In the intervening decade or so, Young has matured into one of the most dynamic, crowd-pleasing performers on the cabaret/concert circuit. Trust me, head over to Feinstein’s/54 Below and you’ll discover for yourself that he’s not too good to be true – he’s just that good!

BOOK IT NOW

The Queens Book Festival-- a celebration of diversity in reading, writing, publishing, and technology—was originally created to introduce area residents, especially the children and young adults, to the many facets and genres within the literary world. Now, this two-day event (complete with a special children’s day on Saturday), held at the LIC Landing in Long Island City, features a host of exhibitors and authors who will take part in non-stop panel discussions, book signings, and an abundance of assorted activities designed to delight readers of all ages.

CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE

I imagine you’ve been to Central Park, but have you ever walked through it as if you were walking through a landscape painting? During the Central Park Conservancy’s guided 90-minute “The Art of the Park Tour,” you will learn all about some of the Park's intricate design features while you view some of this wonderland’s most artfully executed landscapes from Bethesda Terrace to the Bow Bridge and Belvedere Castle.

MUSIC IN THE AIR

What could be better than a free concert in one of the city’s most pastoral settings? Come hear the talented Bronx Arts Ensemble perform an afternoon’s worth of tangos, film scores, and, of course, “The Star Spangled Banner” in the Bronx’s stunning Van Cortlandt Park. Splendor in the grass, indeed.

IT’S GREEK TO ME

Memorial Day weekend shouldn’t be just about long getaways or even parades. Indeed, here’s one intriguing way to honor those who served our country: Leading stage and TV actors Zach Grenier, Kathryn Erbe, and Reg E. Cathey will come together for a free dramatic reading of scenes from Sophocles’ “Philoctetes”, an ancient Greek tragedy about a hero who is abandoned on a deserted island, at the Intrepid Museum. After the event, over 50 active duty military personnel and members of the wider public will take place in an open facilitated discussion exploring the searing impact of violence and war on individuals, families, and young people.
