KUNG FU FIGHTING

As much as we all fell in love (again) with “Wonder Woman,” there have been plenty of other kick-ass ladies on the silver screen. But odds are you may not have seen such stalwart heroines as Angela Mao, Chung Pei Pei, and Kara Hui Ying Hung. Now’s your chance during the seventh annual Subway Cinema’s Old School Kung Fu Fest, being presented this year at the relatively new Metrograph Cinema on Ludlow Street. There are seven films being shown over three days, giving a new meaning to term martial arts lover! (Friday, August 18-Sunday, August 20. Visit www.metrograph.com)

FROM MEXICO WITH LOVE

Looking for some South of the Border flavor without heading to Taco Bell? Then why not catch the brilliant Mexican singer and actress Bianca Marroquin at Feinstein’s/54 Below? Best known to many Broadway audiences for her many sizzling turns as Roxie Hart in “Chicago,” Bianca will perform tunes from her new album “Nuestros Tesoros” along with a selection of hits from the Great White Way! You can even order guacamole and plantains while you’re there! (Friday, August 18. 7pm. Visit www.54below.com)

HOPE FLOATS

A perfect outing for parents and kids alike, “Whatever Floats Your Boat with Ian Garson” allows you to make miniature toy boats and rafts from a variety of materials and set them to sail. And while you learn about the local water quality and history of New York City’s waterfronts, you will experiment with creating your own floatable sculptures equipped with wind-up propellers, sails, and other methods to make them move. Finally, everyone can test their boats in a kiddie pool before a group launch at nearby Socrates Sculpture Park Beach at Hallets Cove. (Saturday, August 19. 12pm. STEP UP TO THE BARBECUE

What could be better than great food and great music. Nothing. So get yourself down to the Hudson River Parks’ 18th annual Blues BBQ at Pier 97 for an amazing day you’ll never forget! Participating artists include the Campbell Brothers, Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, and Eric Gale, while the vittles will be provided by such fine eateries as Mighty Quinn’s and Dinosaur Bar-B-Q. Is your mouth watering already? Mine is! (Saturday, August 19. 2pm. Visit www.hudsonriverparks.org)

ONLY FOR YOU!

A boon for both fans of the beloved TV series “Little House on the Prairie” and shockingly timely theater, Thomas Klingenstein’s play “If Only,” at the charming Cherry Lane Theater, stars the wonderful Melissa Gilbert as a 19th-century New York woman who meets the well-educated slave she once had romantic feelings for – more than three decades after the Civil War has ended! It promises to leave audiences with something to talk about. (Saturday August 19th- September 17th. Visit www.cherrylanetheater.org)
