No dog is complete without its bark. Then again, there are a select few, like the basenji, that don't bark at all. They chortle. This sound does not mimic the common bark, but is instead an inward laugh at just how common and simple the bark has become. With a growl, a chortle and one hell of a bite, the basenji reveals barking for what it is, a limited, exhausted thing of the past. It's even been suggested that this rare breed isn't a dog at all, but instead some other, older, and at the same time more evolved little being.
