Nominations in 25 competitive categories for the American Theatre Wing’s 74th Annual Tony Awards were announced on Thursday. October 15. The abbreviated 2019/2020 eligibility season began April 26, 2019 and ended February 19, 2020. No date has been set for the ceremony.
Only four musicals were eligible, and one of them, “The Lightning Thief,” received zero nominations. Of the remaining group, “Jagged Little Pill” scored 15 nominations, “Moulin Rouge” received 14 nominations (including one for Aaron Tveit, who has no competition as Best Actor in a Musical), and “Tina: The Turner Musical” received 11. The Best Score category nominations went to five plays for the first time in history.

Of the eligible original plays, Jeremy O. Harris’ “Slave Play” led the pack with 12 nods, followed by Matthew Lopez’s “The Inheritance” with 11 nominations and Adam Rapp’s “The Sound Inside” with six nods. “A Soldier’s Play” was the most nominated revival with seven nods.

In the acting categories, nominees included prior winners Audra McDonald, Mary-Louise Parker, John Benjamin Hickey, Karen Olivo and Jane Alexander. Other nominees include Adrienne Warren, Tom Hiddleston, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Sturridge, Laura Linney, Lois Smith, Blair Underwood, David Alan Grier and Danny Burstein.
