The Lower East Side has a new bistro and cocktail bar. Bongos is the latest spot from Michael Beaumont Bray and Noble Harris, the duo behind Kind Regards and Dingaling.
Drawing inspiration from supper clubs, Bongos plans to offer a “chic and vibrant dinner party” every night of the week. Look for classic American bites like Charbroiled Oysters with pecorino, Aleppo, and herbs; Steak Tartare with black sesame, ancho, and pickled mustard seed; Gulf Prawns with cayenne, Worcestershire, oregano and lemon; Bongos Chicken with Calabrian relish, house pickles, and herbs; and Pacific Whiting with guajillo mojo, sourdough, and fennel. Dinner will be served until midnight, along with a curated beverage menu and weekend brunch.
Cocktails include The Chamomile Martini, plus classic and dirty martinis. There’s also a selection of negronis, and “Negroni-adjacent” libations, like Rum-Banana-Coconut, Mexican Coffee and Mezcal-Coffee-Amaro. Other offerings include The Bongos Highball with scotch, honey, ginger and lemon; and The Southside with gin, mint, cucumber and lime.
The intimate setting features curvy, jet black banquettes and tables framed out in chrome. A sheer curtain leads the way to private space with odd shaped tables and mirrored ceiling. Outdoor dining is also available curbside and a backyard atrium. All of the surfaces, lighting and accent pieces have been hand chosen to reflect the personality of the neighborhood.
