The South Street Seaport Museum is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of The Seas by author Samantha Hunt with a special event aboard the historic 1885 tall ship Wavertree on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at 7pm. Presented in partnership with indie bookstore McNally Jackson and BELLETRIST—a book club and media platform founded by Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss—the evening will feature a conversation with Hunt and author-actor Alexandra Auder. The talk will dive into the novel’s themes of mermaids, identity, girlhood, and reality. Tickets range from $15–$32 and include access to the ship.
Published in 2004, The Seas tells the story of a teenage girl who believes she’s a mermaid and has since gained a devoted following for its dreamlike storytelling. The event will also include a book signing and is part of the Seaport Museum’s broader mission to highlight New York’s maritime history through exhibits, events, and its fleet of historic ships.
