Cynthia Erivo to Host 78th Annual Tony Awards

Film and stage star Cynthia Erivo will host the 78th Annual Tony Awards, which will take place at Radio City Music Hall at 8pm on Sunday, June 8 and which will be broadcast live on the CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount.

Nominations for this year’s Tony Awards, which honor the best of Broadway, will be announced on Thursday, May 1.

Erivo won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Celie in the Broadway musical “The Color Purple” and will star in the title role of a special staging of “Jesus Christ Superstar” at the Hollywood Bowl this summer.

The actress, who has also won the Grammy and Emmy Awards, is currently nominated for her third Oscar for her work as Elphaba in Universal’s record-breaking film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical “Wicked.” Part two of the film. “Wicked: For Good,” will be released on November 21.

Her many other film and television credits include “Harriet,” “Genius” Aretha,” “Drift,” “The Outsider,” “Luther: Fallen Sun,” “Pinnochio,” and “Poker Face.”
