The Dumbo Improvement District has unveiled the newly redesigned Dumbo Archway Plaza at 155 Water Street, revitalizing one of the neighborhood’s most iconic public spaces. Originally part of the Pearl Street Triangle, the plaza was the first to open under New York City’s Plaza Program.

Its recent transformation, led by AECOM designer Gonzalo Cruz, brings a modern touch to the historic site, with sculptural seating, custom umbrellas by Dumbo-based artist Liz Collins, and projection art illuminating the Manhattan Bridge.

The redesign is part of Dumbo’s ongoing street preservation efforts, combining the area’s old-world charm with a sleek, 2024 Brooklyn aesthetic. The updated plaza provides an inviting space for both residents and visitors, offering a unique blend of art, design, and community gathering in the heart of Dumbo.

The ribbon-cutting for the new Dumbo Archway Plaza, New York City’s newest and oldest plaza space, coincides with Open House New York Weekend, running from Oct 18 to 20.
