Elizabeth Street Garden, a treasured green space in Nolita, will be preserved thanks to a new agreement between Mayor Eric Adams and Councilmember Christopher Marte. The deal, announced by City Hall, halts redevelopment plans for the garden and designates it as a publicly accessible community space open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. In exchange, Councilmember Marte will support rezonings at three alternate sites in District 1 that will collectively produce over 620 new affordable homes—more than five times the number originally proposed for the garden site.

The agreement not only protects one of Lower Manhattan’s few green spaces but also represents the largest influx of affordable housing in the district in decades. New developments will include senior housing at 156-166 Bowery, nearly 200 affordable units at 22 Suffolk Street, and additional homes at 100 Gold Street. “This incredible win-win shows exactly why we should never give up,” said Marte. Mayor Adams praised the resolution as a model of smart governance: “We’re creating more housing and protecting a beloved garden. That’s a win-win for New York.”

“Elizabeth Street Garden lives on,” said Norman Siegel, leading attorney for Elizabeth Street Garden, in a statement to the New York Post. “This beloved open green space and sculptural work of visual art will continue to serve the people of New York City as a needed public gathering place.”
