George Condo’s two-part exhibition, Pastels, on view at Sprüth Magers and Hauser & Wirth in New York City, showcases the acclaimed artist’s mastery of the pastel medium. A longtime New York resident, Condo explores the human psyche through improvisational techniques, using gesso, bold gestures, and vivid color fields to create works that blur the lines between abstraction and figuration.

At Hauser & Wirth, Condo presents a series of “bizarre characters,” fragmented portraits constructed from geometric planes that reflect the complexity of the mind. Meanwhile, at Sprüth Magers, his abstract black-and-white pastels and vibrant color compositions emphasize movement and emotion, forgoing figural references to focus on rhythm and gesture.

Condo, who once worked as a printer for Andy Warhol, has established himself as a key figure in contemporary art. His 11-foot gold-leaf sculpture, Constellation of Voices (2019), is now a permanent installation at the Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center.
