The team behind Creamline is launching Pulkies, a Jewish-style BBQ restaurant that celebrates New York City’s historic culture and cuisine and honors American comfort food. The name derives from the Yiddish word “Pulke,” or “drumstick” (and is also a term of endearment for chubby baby thighs). The team is currently operating out of their kitchen in Chelsea Market, but is hoping to find a permanent brick and mortar location in the future.
Turkey and brisket are the main attraction – with a special spotlight on the bird. Free-range, all-natural, whole turkeys are sourced from Jaindl Farms in Orefield, PA. Signature dishes include the BBQ Pulled Turkey (slow-cooked leg meat with Pulkies’ BBQ sauce) by pint, quart, or 1½ lbs., and the Pastrami Turkey Breast (Whole or Hand-Sliced). Pulkies’ pasture-raised, all-natural beef is sourced from Rosenkrans Farms in Seneca Falls, NY, and is served as BBQ Chopped Beef (Crispy Burnt Ends, Carrots & Onions) by pint, quart, or 1½ lbs., or Hand-Sliced Brisket (Lean or Well-Marbled) by ½ lb or 1 lb. Sandwich kits are also available. Vegetarian options like the Sweet & Sour Stuffed Cabbage with mushrooms, tomato sauce, and kasha, and a vegan “Sloppy Joseph” with BBQ cauliflower and chickpea hash, round out the mains.
Starters include soups like a Seasonal Borscht Gazpacho (vg) and Mini Matzoh Balls in 8-Hour Broth, and salads like the Kale and Green Apple “Charoset” Style. There’s also a selection of Snacks & Schmears including NYC Pimento Cheese (vg) with white cheddar and sweet & spicy peppers and Chopped Liver with schmaltz and Manischewitz wine jelly.
Pulkies’ selection of sides blend Jewish tradition and BBQ classics, with options like Noodle Kugel “Mac and Cheese”; Honey Butter Cornbread; Vegan BBQ Beans; and Braised Kale with turkey neck broth.
Finally, desserts such as Cinnamon Babka Bread Pudding with chocolate chips and bourbon toffee sauce and Coconut Cream Pie (v) with macaroon crust and a cherry on top offer something sweet.
Assorted soft drinks are available, in addition to canned and original cocktails like the Manischewitz Spritz (Vodka, Seltzer, Red Wine Float) and the Cel-Ray (Gin, Celery Soda, Lemon). Beer, wine and Manischewitz can also be purchased by the can and bottle.
In support of local farms and the Greenmarket initiative, the Pulkies team will donate $1 to GrowNYC for every NYC Pimento Cheese sold. The Pulkies team will also donate $5 to God’s Love We Deliver, an organization that cooks and delivers nutritious, medically-tailored meals for people in need, for every order over $100. As the Pulkies team believes, when you feed yourself, together we can help feed New York City.
Pulkies is located at Chelsea Market – 428 West 16th Street, New York, NY 10011. Takeout and Delivery. Visit their website at https://www.pulkies.com
