In May 2025, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will present Lorna Simpson: Source Notes, the first exhibition to explore the full breadth of the artist's body of work in painting. Known for her pioneering conceptual photography, Simpson’s recent paintings continue her exploration of gender, race, identity, and history. The exhibition will feature over 30 works, including highlights from her 2015 Venice Biennale debut and her Special Characters series. These dynamic pieces blend figuration and abstraction, drawing from vintage imagery in Ebony and Jet magazines, to challenge traditional representations.

“Lorna Simpson has redefined boundaries across multiple media for nearly four decades,” said Max Hollein, Director of The Met. “Her paintings confront us with the complexities of identity in stunning, inventive ways.” Curated by Lauren Rosati, the exhibition will be accompanied by a major scholarly monograph, offering new insights into Simpson’s evolving practice.
