It’s the end of an era in Downtown Brooklyn, where the iconic Macy’s store at 422 Fulton Street is closing. Signs inside and outside the store proclaiming everything must go, including the fixtures.

It was reported by the New York Post, that the 440,000 square foot property was sold for $23 million dollars to a New York based real estate investment group. The Post reporting it sold for $50 a square foot, a fraction of the $250 square foot asking price for other properties in the area.

Before becoming a Macy’s in 1995, it operated as an Abraham and Strauss store in 1893. Historian Ron Schweiger was quoted by NYC NewsService as saying, “It was the most important of all the department stores along Fulton Street. It was the anchor of the community.”

The future of the building remains uncertain. The New York Times reported that The building’s cast-iron façade from the original A&S store was saved and attached to a new glass tower, but city officials never saw fit to grant the building landmark status.

United American Land based in New York reportedly purchased the building. The investor group also owns historical properties in Flatiron, SoHo and other parts of the city.

A worker told us they expect the closing to take place sometime in March.
