A new wave of Indian flavor has arrived on Frederick Douglass Boulevard with the debut of Mustard Indian Eatery, a cheerful neighborhood spot from restaurateur Ruhel Amin (of Masti and Oh! Calcutta). Now open in Harlem, the intimate 28-seat restaurant brings a deeply personal, homestyle take on regional Indian cooking.

Chefs Sharmeen Rahman and Lisha Khondokar lead the kitchen, dishing out soulful plates like a classic chicken curry with mango and mint sauce, and a rich lamb stew infused with cashew, bay leaf, and cardamom. Vegetarians will find comfort in a creamy paneer dish laced with fenugreek and green peas, or smoky roasted eggplant dressed in a tangy blend of peanut, sesame, and tamarind.

Other standouts include crisp golden fish cakes, skewers of creamy, peppery tandoor-grilled shrimp, and saffron-laced biryani layered with vegetables, chicken, lamb or bone-in goat. For dessert, don’t miss the housemade mishti dhoi, a silky sweet yogurt, or the delicate sandesh—a Calcutta sweet made from fresh paneer and sweetened with jaggery, a caramel-like sweetener made from unrefined sugar.

The BYOB space blends casual warmth with thoughtful design—mint green walls, spice murals, and an open kitchen where the tandoor oven is always at work. Mustard is located at 2113 Frederick Douglass Blvd. For more information, visit mustardnyc.com
