Over the weekend, the City of New York officially doubled the space available for pedestrians and cyclists on the Queensboro Bridge, opening a long-promised dedicated pedestrian lane. The south outer roadway — once a limited-use vehicle lane — has been permanently converted into a walkway, while the north outer roadway is now reserved exclusively for cyclists.

The change follows a surge in foot and bike traffic across the bridge, which connects Manhattan and Queens and is among the city’s busiest crossings. For years, pedestrians and cyclists shared a single 11-foot-wide lane, often resulting in crowding and safety concerns.

Mayor Eric Adams hailed the move as a “win-win for everyday New Yorkers,” while DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez emphasized the city’s commitment to creating safer, more efficient non-car transit routes. Additional improvements to the bridge’s infrastructure are expected later this summer.
