Scenes from Coney Island on the Fourth of July

Coney Island was bursting with patriotic energy today as thousands packed the boardwalk to celebrate Independence Day. At Nathan’s Famous, crowds gathered shoulder to shoulder to witness the return of a legend—Joey Chestnut, who devoured a staggering 70.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes to reclaim his crown and the Mustard Belt at this year’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
From there, the party spread across the beach, where sunbathers staked out their spots in the sand and families cooled off in the surf. Just steps away, thrill-seekers lined up for a spin on the Cyclone and other iconic rides, while vendors dished out funnel cakes and frozen lemonades.
