Tom Francis, Jonathan Groff, Audra McDonald Among Dorian Theatre Award Winners

The list of winners for GALECA’s third annual Dorian Theater Awards, which honor the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway, mainstream to LGBTQ+, for the 2024-2025 season, have been announced.

Kimberly Bellflower’s play “John Proctor is the Villain: earned three Dorian Theater Awards for Outstanding Broadway Play, Outstanding Featured Performance in a Broadway Play for Fina Strazza, and Outstanding Broadway Ensemble.

In other Broadway categories, “Maybe Happy Ending” was awarded with Outstanding Broadway Musical, “Sunset Blvd.” won Outstanding Broadway Musical Revival, Jonthan Spector’s “Eureka Day” picked up the Outstanding Broadway Play Revival prize, and “Death Becomes Her,” which was the most nominated production of the year, won the award for Outstanding LGBTQ Broadway production

On the acting front, Outstanding Lead Performance in a Broadway Musical was given to “Audra McDonald “for her portrayal of Rose in the revival of “Gypsy.” McDonald also pulled off a tie victory for The Broadway Showstopper Award for her stunning performance of “Rose’s Turn,” which she shared with Tom Francis, who also won for his rendition of the title song from “Sunset Boulevard”

In addition, Sarah Snook won Outstanding Lead Performances in a Broadway Play for tackling 26 different roles in “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” while Andrew Scott won Outstanding Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway Production for his work in the solo show “Vanya.”

Elsewhere, “Cats: The Jellicle Ball” dominated the Off-Broadway categories as it took home three Dorian Theater Awards, including Outstanding Off-Broadway production, Outstanding LGBTQ Off-Broadway Production, and Outstanding Featured Performance in an Off-Broadway production for André De Shields.

De Shields was also awarded GALECA’s LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer Award, a distinction which celebrates an individual’s lifelong commitment to creating art that inspires empathy, truth and equity. Finally, the group’s other special prize, the LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season award, was bestowed to both Jonathan Groff, who stars in the musical “Just in Time,” and Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the author of the Pulitzer-Prize winning play “Purpose.”
