We're Open: New Yorkers feeding New Yorkers
April 6, 2020, 12:43.42 am ET
Throughtout the city restaurants are literally risking it all to feed New York. Here are just some of them.
Nathan's famous (1310 Surf Ave) in Coney Island remains open for takeout and delivery. The hot dogs are just as good as ever. Patrons we saw were also exercising social distancing. As of now, it looks as though the Hot Dog Eating Contest on July 4th is still on. But we'll have to see how things develop. Phone: (718) 333-2202
In Little Italy, Chef Adam Leonti has opened Sofia's of Little Italy (143 Mulberry Street) with his partner, restaurateur Paul Shaked. They are serving up sandwiches like Smoked Mozzarella with sun-dried tomato and preserved zucchin, along with several pastas including Lasagna all Bolognese and Penne Cacio e Pepe in a classic Roman preparation. There's also homemade breads. Last call is around 9pm. Phone: (212) 219-9799
At Claro (284 3rd Ave), a Michelin-starred restaurant in Gowanus, is now taking orders at the front door as well as delivery. Specialties include braised short rib in a delicious mole sauce and other Oaxacan specialties like Quesadillas de Barbacoa with beef cheek, guajillo, and queso. Phone: (347) 721-3126
Fieldtrip (109 Malcolm X Boulvard) in Harlem is keeping busy with orders from the neighborhood and by folks purchasing meals for first responders. Chef JJ Johnson's "Rice is Culture" concept offers assorted rice bowls with Crispy Chicken with sticky BBQ sauce, Shrimp with green curry and roasted coconut, and Seafood Gumbo. Phone: (917) 639-3919
Julianna's (19 Old Fulton St) in DUMBO may not have a line out the door for a table, but it does have a brisk takeout business. Look for classic pizza (Margherita, Marinara and White with add-ons) along with specialties like Mozzarella, Sausage Broccoli Rabe & Garlic, and Cherry Tomato, Bufala Mozzarella, Garlic and Sea Salt. There's also Patsy's homemade soups. Phone: (718) 596-6700
Nello (696 Madison Ave) on the Upper East Side knows how to get your attention. Giant red teddy bears occupy the cafe seating outside. On the menu, guests will find classic Italian dishes like Carciofi alla Giudia, crisp artichoke, drizzled with balsamic nectar, and Carpaccio Malatesta, filet mignon, arugula, Parmigiano, and olive oil. Phone: (212) 980-9099
Then there's Papaya King (179 East 86th Street) where you can still get your hot dogs and papaya drinks to go! They come with NY onions or relish, sauerkraut, and chili with cheddar cheese sauce. Phone: (212) 369-0648
Other places we've recently written about offering food to go include Nerai (55 E. 54th Street), Tender (130 West 47th St), Sushi Lab (132 47th St), Amuni (7217 3rd Ave, Brooklyn), Shanghai 21 (21 Mott St), Boka (23 Pell Street), Tanoreen (7523 3rd Ave, Brooklyn) and Red Paper Clip (120 Christopher St).
