Type of Place: Women's Clothing
Description: More creativity, local-artist work, and environmentally sustainable fun on Lafayette Street: A few doors down from Designer Collective is its sister store, BrowNY International. Though the BrowNY line includes new and vintage items, the shop mostly features retailored vintage pieces—which is great with me, given my love of all things salvaged and repurposed.
Julie Erinc manages both shops, and I spoke with her at BrowNY about the joy of giving new life to old things and seeing them shine. Julie was a lingerie designer for many years and now makes lingerie-based slip dresses and other attention-getting pieces, including jewelry and accessories.
Browsing the racks and the counters, I loved an asymmetrical blouse in brown with black polka dots by Mari J Brooklyn ($38); a lavender-dyed eyelet-cotton vintage slip from the 1920s, perfect as a summer sun dress, that I might need to go back and buy (for $28!); a vintage necklace with an ornamental butterfly ($20); a yellow flowered "headpiece" with yellow netting ($34, and perfect for any garden parties or summer weddings you might have coming); a charming and classic smiley-face necklace ($20); and a gold headband adorned with a black lace flower ($28). A delicate chain headpiece, designed by Julie ($38), can be seen on shop customer Dakota Fanning; Julie reports that Jennifer Aniston and Zoe Kravitz have also been by.
When I was there, fans of the shop were trying on dresses, deciding what to buy, and wishing they could take everything. You'll feel the same when browsing here—and you'll be supporting local artisans and keeping great materials in use rather than in landfills. Doing good is always in fashion. -Pamela Grossman; may 21, 2012
