Tiffany & Co.
Neighborhood: East 50s
Type of Place: Jewelry
Description:
It would be an interesting experiment to stand outside this legendary jewelry shop and take an informal survey: what percentage of the people walking inside have any intention of making a purchase? It’s safe to say that many arrive at this Fifth Avenue institution to pay homage to the beloved movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and quite a few more come to “window shop” and play elaborate games that involve the frivolous spending of imaginary wealth. Given this knowledge, the elevator man is fairly friendly, even if the sales staff can be a bit stuffy once they know you don’t REALLY intend to make a purchase.
Need a bit of amusement while you’re there? Watch the intense, stressed faces of men as they try to pick out the perfect piece of jewelry for the woman in their life; better yet, watch women desperately trying to make their tastes known to their accompanying boyfriends without being too pushy! A hint to tourists: if you want to be taken seriously, dress nicely; the sales staff doesn’t seem to think that their jewels mix with shorts or sweatpants. - Molly, Summer 2005
