Southern with a twist. That's how Aunt Mae's, in Sunset Park, describes itself. The restaurant on 3rd Avenue near Industry City is open for breakfast and lunch (and maybe an early dinner). Offerings include Chicken & Waffles with double-fried chicken and a crunchy corn flake crust, Shrimp & Homemade Grits, a Fried Cod Fish Sandwich on a brioche bun, and Southern Style Turkey Chili served on sourdough bread. Also on the menu, coffee drinks and smoothies with names like The Green Machine (spinach, orange and banana), Mango Tango (mango strawberry and banana), and Nutty Nana (banana, peanut butter and cocoa). The space at Aunt Mae's is bright and airy with light blue accents and floral wallpaper, marble tabletops and open kitchen. The staff is young and friendly.
