A taste of Kerala’s vibrant toddy shop cuisine has officially arrived in New York City with the opening of Chatti, a new venture from acclaimed Chef Regi Mathew. Known for his highly praised Kappa Chakka Kandhari restaurants in Chennai and Bengaluru, Mathew brings the bold, aromatic flavors of his home state to Manhattan, offering a unique glimpse into Kerala's rich culinary traditions.
The restaurant celebrates the slow-cooked dishes and communal spirit that define Kerala's toddy shop culture, which pairs the naturally fermented palm beverage, toddy, with a variety of small plates, or "touchings" that are traditionally eaten by hand.
Expect delicacies like Prawn Pouches delicately spiced with coconut masala, Toddy Shop Beef Fry served traditionally as a bar snack, and Duck Mappas cooked with coriander and coconut milk, alongside seafood dishes like Karimeen Pollichathu, grilled spot fish served in a banana leaf, and Clay Pot Fish Curry.
The menu also highlights Kerala’s distinctive breads, including Hoppers, thin pancakes made of fermented rice, and coconut milk and Puttu, a flaky, layered flatbread. Desserts feature indulgent options like the signature Cloud Pudding and Bird’s Eye Chilli Ice Cream.
Chatti's inviting space, designed with earthy tones and tropical accents, accommodates up to 80 guests in the main dining area, with intimate private rooms for smaller gatherings.
