With such famous New York City delis as Katz's and 2nd Avenue Deli, it takes a lot of chutzpah to get into the corned beef and pastrami business in this town. But that's exactly what Ted Mann and Michael Esposito are doing. The two are the co-owners of Gold Coast, a stylish deli in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Thomas Rafael
The restaurant has a true deli feel with its tiled floors and walls. The main dining area is large and inviting with vintage lights, over-sized beams and a large sharing table. There's also a large enclosed porch for people watching. But Gold Coast really hits it home with its sandwiches.
The reuben, served on toasted marble rye, is piled high with pastami, swiss, sauerkraut and then topped with Russian dressing. The Coastal is also a mouthful, packed with corned beef and served with homemade potato chips and pickles. Both sandwiches could easily compete with their Manhattan brethren. And while you'll be paying Manhattan prices both are well worth it. The meats, which are cured on site, are moist and delicious.
But there's more to Gold Coast than just corned beef and pastrami. The restaurant is also making a "Cuban Reuben" with pastrami and roast pork, weiner schnitzel, chopped liver and a cheesesteak. There are fun mini knishes with a pretzel crust and potato latkes served with homemade applesauce that might make grandma envious.
Desserts are also better than you'd expect in this neck of the woods. There's a tart key lime pie with whipped cream and wonderfully rich cheesecake swimming in blueberry sauce. Gold Coast is also serving up also another New York classic - egg creams - in chocolate, vanilla and coffee.
