Good is one of those restaurants that is hard to find in NYC. It is moderately priced for lunch, but nice enough to take a date for dinner. Casual enough to walk in without a reservation on Monday nights (when a fantastic prix fixe is offered) but trendy enough to have a hopping bar scene on Saturday nights. Cheddar Hush Puppies with ham, jalapenos, and chile lime honey is the standout of the starters. Dense nuggets of cornbread were filled with salty ham, jalapenos, and pockets of gooey melted cheese. An indulgent and satisfying appetizer.
Housemade Potato Chips with caramelized onion dip is an upscale take on the classic chips and dip of suburban house parties. The chips are thinly sliced and extremely crispy. The dip houses ribbons of gently caramelized onions in tangy mayonnaise.
Escarole and Farro with red onion, smoked almonds, pecorino, and garlic-anchovy vinaigrette is a light, multifaceted salad. Nutty faro and crisp escarole provide the background to salty cheese and a pungent, Caesar-like vinaigrette.
For a heartier appetite, the burger is a great choice. Served on a dense English muffin, the coarsely ground beef is loosely packed and served at a juicy medium rare. The hand cut fries are fluffy on the inside, crispy on the outside, and an addition of spicy homemade pickles top off the dish.
The service here is efficient and seems to have improved since my last visit. The prices are fair (especially for the West Village), and the food is great. In fact, if the restaurant changed its name to "Great," that would really be more fitting.
