Cititour: The New York Guide to Events, Restaurants, Music, and Nightlife

Hallo Berlin

Hallo Berlin

Cuisine: German

Cititour Review: This was my first visit to a beer garden, and I must say, I felt like I had left New York and somehow arrived in Berlin. The place is hopping with German tourists and New Yorkers alike. There are picnic tables for eating and drinking, and a great selection of German beers which I'll get to in a moment. Is it fine dining? No. Is it fun dining? Yes! It's also a great place for groups. The menu is packed with different types of sausages. There's Bratwurst, Bauernwurst , Knockwurst and Bockwurst. I went for a Bavarianwurst made from veal. It arrived on a crusty roll loaded with red cabbage, sauerkraut, onions and mustard. It was a little hard to handle, but very delicious. And for $4.50, if you're looking for a place to eat on the cheap, this is it. A side of potato pancakes (2 for $4.50), perfectly crusty around the edges, were served with a bit of apple sauce. Larger dishes include Wiener Schnitzel ($17), which I plan to try on a return trip, and Berliner beef goulash served with mashed potatoes, red cabbage and wine sauerkraut. As for the beer list, there are seven German beers on tap, including Dortmunder Pilsner, Hefeweisen Yeast Wheat, Bitburger Pilsner and Hofbraeuhaus Lager. Prices range from $4 for a mug to $7 for a stein. $12 will get you a humpen (not really sure what that is) and $15 for a large pitcher. There are also 20 imported bottled beers including Hacker-Pschorr Ale, Dab, Koelsch, Schneider Weisse Weissbeer and Berliner Weisse with rasberry syrup. For dessert, you'll find German Chocolate Cake and Apple Streusel. Is the food at Hallo Berlin the best German food you've tasted? Probably not. Is it good, somewhat greasy, German comfort food? And the answer is probably yes. But we still think it's worth a big hallo!
