Cititour Review:

Mel's Burger Bar is a Morningside Heights staple, offering a variety of burgers and beers in a fun sports bar atmosphere: the perfect place to hang out with friends and grab a bite, whether inside or on the outdoor terrace. The atmosphere attracts largely Columbia students, though Morningside Heights residents have started flocking to this bar, decorated in dark wood and brick, with checkerboard floors and large chalkboards announcing specials and six flat-screen televisions.

The burgers are all locally sourced, and while the meat tends to be under-seasoned, the variety of toppings still allows for a tasty meal: the Cheeseburger Baby (9.65) with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and cheese and served on a potato roll is a classic, while the 10 oz. Cowboy (14.50) with cheddar cheese, chili, onion strings, mushrooms and BBQ sauce is sure to fill even the hungriest burger lover.

Better still are the sides, desserts and drinks. Choose fried pickles (7) or delicious and savory homemade sweet potato chips (4.50) to share. Lovers of spicy flavors will appreciate the atomic fries (5.50). Desserts include fried Oreos (7) and a variety of milkshakes, from classic vanilla, strawberry and black and white (6.50) to creative additions like cotton candy and peanut butter and jelly (7.50). Nearby Columbia students love the spiked shakes with creative names like Rotten Apple, a combination of vanilla ice cream and big apple rum (11.50), and After Dinner Mint, with white mint Oreo ice cream and peppermint schnapps (11.50).

For something a little lighter to drink while watching the game, the large variety of both draught and bottled beers and house cocktails like spiked whisky-mint lemonade (8) and Hook punch, a not-too-sweet combo of Jim Beam, orange soda and lime (8) make this hangout so popular.
