Who would have thought my favorite new place for gelato would be found at Macy's. But that is exactly where you will find Vivoli il Gelato of Florence as it make its U.S. debut. The shop, or should we say marble counter, is part of Stella 34, a trattoria on the six floor of Macy's stashed away behind the sheets and linen on the sixth floor. It's so well hidden that even a Macy's worker didn't know it even existed. But attached to Stella you will find Vivoli and it is truly worthy of a trip to Herald Square.
Chocolate gelato so rich, so decadent, so flavorful that it easily rivals Grom and the portions are larger. There is pistachio and stracciatella with bits of chololate along with zabaione. Almond crunch is light and breezy with a smattering of toasted almonds and pear so pure you will think you are biting into one. Just thinking about it makes me want another cup. Viva Vivoli!
