In an area of Brooklyn with more Italian restaurants than you can shake a stick out, it's not easy to stand out, especially if you're main dish is pizza. But Zitelli's with its bright, airy dining areas and tasty thin crust pizza is off to a good start.
The restaurant, on 86th Street and 3rd Avenue, is serving up more than just pizza. Starters include clams in a spicy marinara sauce, Sicilian-style rice balls stuffed with ground beef an peas, and grilled baby octopus. We tried the calamari which was fried up nicely with a crisp coating and served with a fresh, house-made tomato sauce.
Pizzas come with a variety of different toppings. The Margherita gets fresh mozzarella, tomato sauce and basil; Smokey Pineapple gets a helping of bacon, while a Buffalo Chicken pie is topped with crumbled blue cheese. They also have a Mac & Cheese pie which sounds interesting. We shared a large Salsiccia Dolce topped with Italian sausage and caramelized onions. It was excellent and could easily feed three. Most pies range from $12-$13 for the small to $19-$20 for a large. They all have one thing in common - a thin cracker-like crust that manages to hold up extremely well. Pizzas can also be customized the way you like it.
Aside from pizza, Zitteli's also offers a number of pasta dishes, Italian specialties like eggplant and chicken parm, salads and sandwiches. Desserts include tiramisu, Italian cheesecake and a Nutella pizza. The restaurant is great for families and large groups. We also found the staff to be very attentive and friendly, which is a big plus. Mangia.
