Cititour.com Review
She may be iconic, but Holly Golightly is just one of many beautiful young women who come to New York seeking self-reinvention. Scores of TV and film stars arrive on Broadway each season, hoping to prove they've got the pluck and talent to succeed on the Great White Way. The latest, Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, has certainly set a high bar for herself, tackling what is probably Audrey Hepburn's most beloved role in a new stage version of Breakfast at Tiffany's, adapted by Richard Greenberg from Truman Capote's 1940s-set novella.

Clarke is a graceful and alluring stage presence, not to mention a rapturous bundle of seductive energy as Holly dazzles her many admirers, especially Cory Michael Smith’s love-struck writer Fred. But she doesn't reach the core of Holly's vulnerability, even after her dark secrets have been revealed, so her journey doesn't amount to one that's as involving or wrenching as it has the potential to be.

Smith, on the other hand, despite also being saddled with copious narration duties, is much more successful in his first Broadway outing, bringing subtlety and sensitivity to a character who could easily become a passive bystander. Among the other 13 (!) cast members, notable supporting turns include performances from George Wendt, Murphy Guyer and Kate Cullen Roberts, not to mention a winning cameo from Vito Vincent the cat.

Greenberg stays too true to Capote's fable-like novella (which differs considerably from the famous film). Spoken, the original author's dialogue and themes about the search for home and identity play as if they've been heavily underlined. Director Sean Mathias lets the play unfurl gently and gradually, but when a play has clearly been orchestrated for commercial viability even a diamond like Tiffany's loses its luster.
