Cititour.com Review
Even though he’s a Broadway newbie, Tom Hanks gives the kind of meticulous, multilayered performance in Lucky Guy that we’ve come to expect from the two-time Oscar winner. Unfortunately, no amount of luck can elevate Nora Ephron’s sprawling play to Hanks’s level.

Hanks stars as Pulitzer-winning New York Daily News columnist Mike McAlary, who died of cancer on Christmas Day in 1998 at the age of 41. (This is actually the second play about the controversial tabloid journalist to hit New York recently, following The Wood in 2011.) In many ways it’s a lesson in old-school newspaper journalism; some of McAlary’s ethical choices may have been questionable, but he pursued his stories with the same tenacity that he did his opulent Long Island home and six-figure contract. And after a fall from grace he rebounded to break the story of Abner Louima, the man sodomized by cops in a Brooklyn precinct bathroom.

Despite a beautifully staged production—director George C. Wolfe navigates a mostly male cast of 14—Lucky Guy unfolds like a documentary without dramatic flair, with characters addressing the audience nearly as much as they do each other. And even as it details McAlary’s flaws, Ephron’s play gives the character a romantic tinge that’s not earned.

But audiences paying top dollar—and even standing through the show—to see it will get their money’s worth on that front. Aided by a coterie of top supporting players—notably Courtney B. Vance, Peter Gerety, Richard Masur and Hanks’s former Bosom Buddies costar Peter Scolari—Hanks creates a moving portrait of a man who endured more than his share of triumphs and defeats in his short life. No luck needed when you’re that talented.
